If the life insurance industry gave out a Product of the Year award in the same vein as Time Magazine’s Person of the Year, there is little doubt in my mind that the 2017 winner would have been Pacific Life’s Discovery Xelerator IUL – commonly referred to as PDX. Beyond its obvious sales success (rumored Q3 PacLife IUL sales were greater than its closest two competitors combined for the entire year), no product caused more of a splash, pushed more boundaries and generated more controversy than PDX. I would also argue that no product has been more misunderstood, misrepresented or mis-sold than PDX. It deserves the attention it has received, both positive and negative. Whether it deserves the sales is open for debate.
